Fairfield Exterior

The exterior of the house has been really fun to work on. I’m not completely done but I wanted to share where I am with the process through pictures.

I started with the porch. Using coffee stirrers I cut ends at an angle so that they would come together nicely at the middle corner of the porch. Used wood glue to glue them in place. Craft clips from the dollar store helped them stay down while the glue dried.

For the bay windows I used DryDex spacking. It was extremely easy to spread with the help of a plastic putty knife. It went on pink and dried white. I put it on and just swirled it around to give it its own pattern.

Siding!

I cut cereal boxes for this siding. Cheap and efficient. I cut them to be 1cm in diameter. If this was a 1:12 house I would have done 2cm. The corners are 2cm folded so that the cover the seams. Glued each piece on individually with tacky glue. This took honestly about 8 hours between measuring, cutting and gluing.

The front door and windows all came from miniatures.com. I love the modern look of this door.

The door was actually a bit small for the opening but I used the siding to cover the space.

And then color!

To paint I used a hard bristle brush, so that the siding has a more weathered look to it.

I love how the yellow door pops against the teal house! (the door is not glued in so that its removable for easier access to the foyer)

(eventually I’ll hunt down hardware for the door so that it’ll have a door knob)

Last up was the roof. I didnt think the tower fit with the aestethic so I cut it off. I used the dremel took to cut it right under the oval circle window. I used chipboard to create the new front to the tower and the new tower roof.

I mixed the house colors paint with black to get a darker teal for the shingles on the gables.

Still to complete:
– Shingling the roof and stain or paint it: my least favorite thing to do
– Stain the wood on the porch
– Add columns to the porch
– Add some porch decor
