Flooring Prep

Now that the walls of the house are complete, time to think about flooring!

It took me about 2 hours to prep the flooring for the bedroom. I’m going to start laying the tile however I already know I’m going to need to revisit Lowes for another long tile.

I started with the one long tile. I cut it into 3 inch strips. (Keep in mind that cutting isn’t going all the way through, just basically cuts the top then breaking the tile at the cuts)

That left me with 8 smaller strips, all 3 inches wide. Which will be the length of my flooring planks. From there I measured a 1/2 inch on the top and bottom of each of the 8 strips. This was the finished planks will be 3 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Hopefully mimic the size of planks in a life size house. Using first an exact-o knife, and then a box cutter, I cut these into the small strips for the flooring. I had to switch to the box cutter after the exact-o knife got dull and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to change the blade. The box cutter actually worked a lot better and I wish I had just used it from the beginning.

Cutting was easy. But again, the knife is not cutting all the way through the tiles. It’s leaving a cut in the surface and in order to break the cuts I had to bend the tile in order for them to snap. This part wasn’t as easy. My hands definitely hurt from it. The middle part was easier to snap while the ends were the more difficult parts. The end result planks look pretty awesome. Giving my hands some time to relax then I’ll lay the planks another day. Super pleased with the progress!
